Your Favorite Things

Your Favorite Things

Aimer, your favorite singer

I chose Your Favorite Things as the title as it is a cornerstone of the artist in her career.

With her deep unique husky voice, her cover of Lady Gaga’s Poker Face reached the top in the lead album chart for the jazz category in the iTunes Store and its album reaching second. Accompanied by this big jump, her start wasn’t actually an easy one. When she was 15, she damaged her vocal chords by accident but it soon was gradually treated with Silent therapy. Then when her voice came back it was new, different and was to be obsessed with. She entered the industry with mystery – her voice, identity, and style were distinct from others and thus would give anyone an experience they would ever remember in their lives.

Anime, the way to people’s hearts

Not only did Aimer sing for the masses but also for the enthusiasts. It became a sustenance for her career as it would always be there to be an strategic point to combine her music with culture. Her continuing popularity proved its benefits.

I just want to bring up her debut song Rokutosei no Yoru (Night of the Sixth Magnitude Stars) from No.6 anime.

The song evokes good memories and expresses the sadness of a farewell, but mixed with the hope of meeting that person again.
Rokutosei refers to the stars with the apparent magnitude  of 6.
In astronomy, magnitude measures the brightness of a celestial body.
The brighter an object appears, the lower the value of its magnitude, with the brightest objects reaching negative values.
Magnitude six stars are usually the limit human naked eyes can observe. But, only in a very dark sky and in places without light pollution.
So, these nights are the darkest, but also lighten by the dimly shining stars which represent the hope that always exists.

Her songs Brave Shine and Last Stardust were some of the well known hits she made for an anime most likely to an adaptation of a game route called Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works. After Aimer finished the game she made both songs and gave them to the producer, one ended up as the Opening theme and the other as an Insert song in Episode 20 of the series. She also made songs for Bleach, Gundam Unicorn, Natsume’s Book of Friends and Vinland Saga.

Connections

Her position did not only ended up being a single singer but also had collaborations and mentions from many notable people. Some of the big names Aimer worked with were  Taka (ONE OK ROCK), Yojiro Noda (RADWIMPS),  TK (Ling tosite sigure) the Tokyo Ghoul OP singer, and chelly (EGOIST). All of her participation with them and other artists songs are compiled in her Daydream album. Aimer’s Kataomoi(One-sided Love) was also recommended in Twitter by Namjoon from BTS a popular K pop group giving her a well deserved attention from more people. Another plus is that she had a performance with Slovak Radio Symphony, an orchestra.

Revelations

Did you know she only revealed her face in 2016? Hidden behind the angles of the spotlight during her concerts and even the cameras avoided showing her face. And guess what, she wears glasses while singing live which all the more contributed to her shy and mysterious persona.

“Because my best feature is my singing voice, I wanted people to focus only on my music without prejudice by excluding other information because nowadays you can get various kinds of information quickly.” – Aimer

Another reason we see here is that in one time,”dry” voice like an adult, and “sweet” voice like a child, that voice a “DRY & SWEET”. She really appreciates it if her voice is described in that way and it also really comes close to her 2nd cover album entitled Bitter & Sweet.

The pseudonym Aimer (エメ, pronounced eh-meh) is a French word which means “to love”. She didn’t reveal her real name but she said that she’s from Kumamoto, Japan. She sings  jazz, pop, ballads, orchestral and rock. Aimer entitled herself as singer-songwriter. Read this blog for about her position in the music industry.

Other facts? In an early age, Aimer started well with music as her father was a bassist of a band. During her elementary years she played the piano. With the inspiration from different musicians she looked up to, she made a move to learn guitar in junior high. She also writes music in English has good authority on the language because of her experiences living abroad.

With all these information, I reckon that Aimer is like a flower blooming in the desert, amongst the parched barren sands, a different beauty is secretly hidden like a gem waiting to be found and be kept again in a grandiose of collection. Truly a mystery.

We await more of her concerts because she is only in her adult ages born July 9, 1990. Here are the tickets.

Shi Lin – Taiwanese Restaurant

Authentic Taiwanese Restaurant

I’ve never been to a lot of Authentic Taiwanese restaurants here in the Philippines obviously because there aren’t many and some of them are being mistaken as Chinese or even Japanese restaurant due to some similarities on their menu.

Shi Lin is an authentic Taiwanese restaurant located in several branches here in Metro Manila that offers decent variety of food items on their menu.

The one that stands out is their Xiao Long Bao and Rice meals.

Their Xiao Long Bao delivers the right flavors on your pallet especially when paired with Ginger Soy sauce.

Do not be mistaken by their rice bowl because for it’s price, it’s almost good for 2 person and their Braised beef noodle soup has a mouthful chunk of tender and juicy beef meat and savory broth.

If you happened to cross into one of their branches, don’t hesitate to try their food items.

GET OUT: LET’S DISCUSS ITS GENIUS

GET OUT: LET’S DISCUSS ITS GENIUS

The scene where Chris sinks into a void called “The Sunken Place”.

I love Horror Movies. If you don’t know, Get Out is a Horror Movie that was released in 2017 that was written and directed by Jordan Peele.  I know the movie is a bit old, considering that it was released 2 years ago. However, I do want to share my thoughts about it and why I have included this to the list of my favorite Horror Movies.

I’m quite sure most of us have seen a couple of Horror Movies. So what comes to your mind when you think of the Horror Movie Genre? For most of us, a Horror Movie includes spirits, ghosts, and demons. That’s where Get Out gives it’s viewers (especially the Horror fans) a different experience when it comes to the Horror Film Genre: It’s not your typical Horror Movie.

Here’s a short description of what the movie is about:

The film is about an interracial couple, Chris Washington and Rose Armitage. The couple goes to Upstate New York so that Chris can meet Rose’s family for the first time. This is a big deal for the couple because Chris is Rose’s first black boyfriend. The horror starts unraveling for the couple when Chris notices some strange things about Rose’s family’s black servants and their friends after being hypnotized by her mother. (I won’t go into detail about the movie’s plot so that I won’t be spoiling anything to those who haven’t seen it yet.)

Here are 4 Reasons Why I Love the Film:

4. A Comedian’s Successful Horror Feature Debut.

The shocking thing that you might find out about this Horror Film, is that it was written and directed by comedian–Jordan Peele.

I am a fan of Keagan-Micheal Key and Jordan Peele. I watch their show on Comedy Central and, I sometimes watch their old MadTV skits on Youtube. So, I am quite familiar with Peele’s career as a comedian. I was a bit shocked when I found out that his name would be included in the horror genre. Considering that this was Peele’s directorial debut, I was pleasantly surprised that Peele has crafted a perfect horror satire with knife-edge humor and genuinely chair-grabbing tension.

Keegan-Micheal Key (Left) and Jordan Peele (Right). They have a show called Key and Peele which airs on Comedy Central.

3. Symbolism and References.

Get Out also contains numerous references to the current and past socio-political climate of the United States. The most obvious example of this is the garden ‘auction’ held for Chris by the Armitage family for their guests. While this links into the story, it is impossible for the audience to not think about slavery.

Auction Scene from the Movie, Get Out.

2. Not Your Typical Horror Movie.

As I’ve previously stated, Get Out contains no ghosts, spirits or demons as one might expect to see when watching a horror film  And yet it is scary in a way that it manages to build its suspense that I’m sure a die-hard horror aficionado would appreciate the chilling content of the film. It’s funny, it’s tense, it features two great performances from Chris and Rose and Jordan Peele, expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don’t know what is happening for the majority of the run time. The movie elevates to a “Holy Shit!” level when it is revealed about what’s actually happening at the family’s estate.

1. It Will Make You Squirm.

A horror film is only good if it is one thing: SCARY. Most films have a core theme or message they wish to convey but an audience still needs to enjoy a film whether it’s thrilling, funny or scary. In the case of Get Out, the film ticks all three traits. The film’s mixture of horror and comedy creates something entirely unique. The mixture of these genres also compliments the story as it aims to confuse the audience. The audience is constantly thrown off by the film’s sudden shifts. They have no idea what is happening and what will happen next.  Get Out removes all the safety nets and even the most experienced horror aficionados will be unable to sit still.

Overall, Get Out is witty and scary and fun. It’s also rattling with outrage, and, in its peculiar and prickly way, a bitter sadness. I haven’t seen a horror movie like it in quite some time.

Here is the Movie’s Trailer:

Avengers: Infinity Wars

The Hype

I watched this most anticipated film this year a week ago – Avengers: Infinity War with the couple, my sister with her hubby, you can say I was third-wheeling but hey, it was for free! This was their treat. Anyhow, When I was a kid I was already a fan of the comics. I’m a mix of everything but on this one, probably, you can say my geek side is dominant on the matter. (Lol!)

To be honest I was imagining scenes before the movie was actually playing because I know the story and how it ended — but you know, I’m pretty cynical myself so I already thought too that the original plot. The characters and some events may vary or they’ll just revise it into something isn’t from the original plot/story. That’s the pattern they do for it to fit into their movie-like agenda (profit!). Before I watched the film it was making news and has breaking All-time records. So, I thought it was really good.

The Real Score

As for me, I was disappointed because I am expecting the main plot would not be tampered that much by whoever has the power to do so. There are many revisions but I wouldn’t recall them all because it was a decade ago or more. When I last read it and the fact that I was just a kid. I was fond of the idea that Marvel Comics is eventually making it to the big screen because it was a vision of ours too, years ago.

I liked the graphics and stuff they did to the movie. But, honestly didn’t like the movie that much at all. All I really like was I able to go out and see a movie once again after months of not having to do so. If ever you’re wondering what is my rating for this movie it’s — 6/10.

So, for those who want to watch it in the future. Here is the trailer. Enjoy!
